Overall Description 2013-14

Roles and Tasks



Program Coordinator

  • Oversees total implementation of the program.

  • Assists in promotion of program as well as dissemination and review of applications.

  • Assists in selection process of Teacher Leaders, RET Teachers and COFS Fellows.

  • Creates timeline.

  • Coordinates location and times for professional development.

  • Observes other teachers and senior engineering students teach challenge based learning lessons.

  • Creates a project calendar for keeping records of observations and teaching dates for all participants.

  • Plans culmination event.

  • Collects task sheets for COFSP Fellows.


Evaluator

  • Collects data on effectiveness of the professional development.

  • Monitors and evaluates the implementation of the program and measures learning gained.

  • Reports findings.


Teacher Leaders (6)

  • Collectively deliver 10 hours of professional development to RET Teachers and COFSP Fellows.

  • Supervise RET Teachers and COFSP Fellows in creation and implementation of challenge based learning and engineering design process instructional Units and Activities.

  • Creates observation opportunities for RET Teachers and COFS Fellows.

  • Provides formal feedback RET Teachers and COFS Fellows creation and implementation of challenge based learning and engineering design process instructional Units and Activities.

  • Sign- off on task sheet for RET Teachers and COFSP Fellows.

  • Attends RET/COFS Final Presentations Program and Banquet in April 2014.


RET Teachers

  • Attends the Orientation Session.

  • Attends the 4 evening Professional Development sessions.

  • With guidance from the Teacher Leader, submits a draft of an instructional Unit using the CEEMS Template.

  • Works with the Fellow assigned to my classroom to create a weekly school schedule.

  • Identifies an Activity topic for the Fellow.

  • Review, provide feedback to and approve Activity constructed by Fellow before and after implementation.

  • Provide Critique to Activity after instruction for revisions have been shared with Fellow.

  • Complete Monthly Progress Survey (Online).

  • Sign Fellow’s Log book 1x/Month.

  • Attend and present at RET/COFSP Program Final Presentations and Banquet in April 2014.


COFSP Fellows

  • Attends the Orientation Session.

  • Attends the 4 evening Professional Development sessions.

  • Works with an assigned RET teacher in the classroom or with students in an afterschool math or science program or club for 6 hours/week with additional preparation time of 4 hours per week.

  • Posts a weekly Google calendar.

  • Submits an Activity Plan draft to Teacher Leader and RET Teacher.

  • Develops and implements an instructional Activity based on a topic already being taught in the RET Teacher’s classroom.

  • Incorporates topic of Capstone project into instructional Activity.

  • Creates and implements, with the assistance of the RET Teacher, an Activity pre and post assessment tool designed to measures student learning.

  • Submits a reflective essay on student learning, the effectiveness of the Activity and what would be done differently if the Activity was taught again.

  • Revises final Activity in preparation for posting on RET website.

  • Makes a final presentation at the Program Final Presentations and Banquet in April 2014.


Timeline of RET Events

  • August - September 11th, 2013: Open application process for Teacher Leaders, RET Teachers and Choose Ohio First Scholarship Fellows.

  • September 18th, 2013: Selections are finalized for Teacher Leaders, RET Teachers and Choose Ohio First Scholarship Fellows.

  • September 2013: Teacher Leaders plan Professional Development Sessions.

  • October 9th, 2013: Orientation Session on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 from 4:30pm-6:30pm for Teacher Leaders, RET Teachers and Choose Ohio First Scholarship Fellows.

  • October 9th, 2013: First week of Fellows assignment to RET Teachers’ classrooms.

  • October 15th, 2013: Professional Development Session on Challenge Based Learning.

  • October 22nd, 2013: Professional Development Session on Engineering Design Process.

  • October 29th, 2013: Professional Development Session on Curriculum , Academic Content Standards, Assessment, Instruction and Misconceptions.

  • October - December: RET Teachers will observe Teacher Leaders.

  • November 5th, 2013: Professional Development Session on Unit, Lesson and Activity Construction.

  • December 1, 2013: RET Teachers identify an Activity topic for the Fellow by December 1, 2013. RET Teacher identify a big idea for the Unit they will create and share with the Teacher Leader.

  • January 2014: Activity for Fellow is developed in draft form including pre and post assessments and submitted to Teacher Leader and RET Teacher for approval. Unit for RET Teachers is developed in draft form including pre and post assessments and submitted to Teacher Leader for approval.

  • February 2014: Teacher Leader and RET Teacher provide feedback and approval to Fellow for finalized Activity. Teacher Leader provides feedback and approval to RET Teacher for finalized Unit.

  • February and March 2014: Fellows teach Activity to students and administer pre and post assessments. RET Teachers teach Unit to students and administer pre and post assessments.

  • February and March 2014: Fellow assesses data collected and evaluates success of Activity and impact on student learning. Teacher Leader and RET Teacher provide critiques and feedback on Activity implementation. RET Teacher assesses data collected and evaluates success of Unit and impact on student learning. Teacher Leader provides critiques and feedback on Unit implementation.

  • March 2014: Fellow submits a reflective essay on student learning, the effectiveness of the Activity and what would be done differently if the Activity was taught again. Fellow revises and submits Final Activity Plan to be posted on the RET website. RET Teacher completes Unit template requirements (part that need completion after implementation.) Teacher Leader and RET Teacher complete evaluation tool together.

  • April 2014: Fellow makes a final presentation at the Program for Final Presentations and Banquet in April 2014.
