Essential Questions

The Hook Students will begin with a true/false questionnaire about animals and animal surgery. Following their completion of the questionnaire, the answers will be revealed and the student with the most questions correct will earn a small reward. In addition, students will watch a video explaining and showing the steps to spaying a female dog. |
The Challenge Design and create a prototype of a device that can be used in a minimally invasive surgery to clamp and cut an artificial animal organ. |

With the increased research and development of tools used for minimally invasive surgery, these type of surgeries are becoming more popular and safer for all living creatures.
Minimally invasive surgery is growing in popularity for both human and animal surgeries as it reduces recovery time and infection possibilities. With the advent of new technologies to use during these surgeries the cost is reduced and safety increases.

Unit Lessons and Activities
- Lesson 1: Exploring Minimally Invasive Surgery In this lesson, students are introduced to minimally invasive surgery and explore the differences between this and conventional surgery. Students will also discover some of the challenges to creating a device used in minimally invasive surgery through a mini-design challenge.

- Lesson 2: Minimally Invasive Surgical Devices In the second lesson students use the knowledge gained about minimally invasive surgery to create a device that could be used in this surgery to clamp and cut an animal organ. Upon completion of the challenge and the EDP, students will go on a field trip to Ethicon EndoSurgery to see what devices have been designed by engineers for the same purposes.
